Education budget cuts draw hip hop stars to NY streets
NEW YORKEducation or Homeland Security? Education or prisons? Education or Medicare? These are the battles advocates of the nations children are fighting as they seek to avoid education cuts on the federal and state levels, even as local revenues decline and other federal agencies line up for increased funding. In New York, education advocatesled by hip hop mogul Russell Simmonsconverged June 4 on City Hall in a boisterous demonstration against proposed budget cuts by Mayor Michael Bloomberg. An estimated 100,000 students, parents, teachers, community activists and a number of hip hop stars participated. more

With pro-Israeli funding, candidates put Reps. Hilliard, McKinney in run-offs
ATLANTA, Ga.Rep. Hilliard, along with Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney (D-Ga.), are seeking their sixth terms in Congress. Two relatively unknown opponentsArtur Davis, a 34-year-old former prosecutor, and former state judge Denise Majettehave gained noticeable attention. Both appear to be riding the coattails of a well-financed vendetta waged by pro-Israeli groups against the incumbents and both are relying heavily on negative press to rally voters to them.  Pro-Israeli lobbyists and organizations for years have sought to unseat the popular Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) members due to the their controversial stances, particularly with regard to United States-Middle East policy.more

Being Black when no one is looking
by James Clingman - Guest Columnist-
Have you ever wondered what those Black folks, who seem to be afraid of being perceived as too Black, think when they look into the mirror? Do you think that when they are alone they acknowledge who they really are? Do you think that when they stare at themselves, they appreciate the reflection looking back at them? And, what about this? Do you thinkdespite some of our brothers and sisters reluctance and resistance in some cases to being Blackthat they admit who they are and understand their place in history? more

The fatherhood movement and marriage debates
WASHINGTONThomas Read, a 21-year-old single dad with a four year old and his second baby on the way, is a good example of the dilemma facing the fatherhood movement.  He was recently recognized at the Fourth Annual International Fatherhood Conference with a Spirit of Fatherhood award for turning his life around and developing a great relationship with his son, Dezmond. Thats good, but Thabiti Boone, author, national activist and fatherhood advocate who watched Mr. Read get his award, asks, Why do we keep rewarding single fathers? We have to stop praising fathers for doing whats expected with their children.  We have to praise fathers for marrying the mother of their children. more

Peace movement launched by Jewish soldiers who refuse to fight
PHILADELPHIAA former commander in the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) bared his soul June 5 concerning the horrendous injustices his country continues to commit against the Palestinian people in the name of self-defense.  Before a hushed, predominately Jewish audience at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, former army lieutenant and company commander Noam Sheizaf, 27, detailed the reasoning behind Israels newest peace movement, the "Ometz Lesarev" (Courage to Refuse). more

Musiq never sounded so good! The man who hails from the newly crowned Mecca of soul music, Philadelphia, is back and better than ever.  When Musiq (a.k.a. Taalib Johnson) burst upon the scene in 2000 with the song Just Friends (Sunny), he had people wondering: What is the name of that song and who is that cat singing?  The song was infectious and you could not get it out of your head.  That song from the Nutty Professor II soundtrack launched his professional music career and got him a recording contract with Def Jam/Def Soul.  He has just released the long awaited follow-up to his 2000 platinum debut, Aijuswanaseing. more
