INGRATITUDE

by Minister Louis Farrakhan

[Editors note: The following is part 2 of text taken from a message by Minister Louis Farrakhan delivered May 18, 2002 at St. Cyprians Episcopal Church in Boston. It is the church where Min. Farrakhan was nurtured as a child and pastored by Father Henderson Brome.]

In the Name of Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful.

America is in deep trouble. We live here and we are in deep trouble. Brother Farrakhan has determined that the leadership in the country is off course. And if men and women of conscience do not speak, then you are aiding and abetting the destruction of this nation with you in it.

President Bush has said it is the policy of his government to remove Saddam Hussein from power. Usually American presidents would covertly undo a head of state that they didnt like. But the head of state of the greatest nation on earth has said that this is the policy of his administrationnot to put the homeless in some homes, not to put the jobless to work, not to give health insurance to the American people who are without health insuranceis to go into another mans house and remove him because they say he is trying to get weapons of mass destruction. Yet, we are dying every day from weapons of mass destruction that are aimed at Black and Brown and poor people in this country.

So, if it is the Will of Allah (God), I will be going overseas within the next month or so visiting countries in the Middle East and some in Africa. But, my aim is to stop a war. It came out in the New York Times three Sundays ago that if President Bush is going to get Saddam Hussein, it will take from 70,000 to 250,000 American troopsmost of whom are Black and Brown and poor Whiteon the ground with a bombing campaign similar to, but more intense than what was unleashed on Afghanistan. That is an illegal thing for this country to do. And President Bush has already pulled out of a treaty that would give other nations the right to try American officials or generals for war crimes. Why did they pull out?

What no other country can do in judging America, Allah (God) is not too weak to do. You keep your eyes open and watch. The same plagues that Allah (God) brought on Pharaoh, Hes bringing them down on America as we speak. Wind and rain and snow and earthquakes and hail, all of this is going to strike America. If America thinks that because she is the super power she can get away with the murder of people all over the world, then your day of justice and judgment has come. And thats the kind of preaching that you need to hear to get yourself right. Too many of us are playing with Allah (God), but you are going to pay a price for playing with Him because this is payday. America can frighten the weak but she cannot frighten those whose faith and trust is completely in Allah (God).

How many of you have heard of Paul Robeson? Wasnt he a wonderful man? But look at how he died brokenhearted because we turned on him. And that was because the media made us think that a good man was a communist. He spoke out against the Korean War, but he spoke for us. They took his passport and called him a communist. Do you remember W.E.B. DuBois? They took his passport and claimed that he was a terrible man. They may take mine. Martin Luther King Jr. decided to speak out against the war in Vietnam and within one year he was gone. My passion is that there should be not one American soldier to lose his or her life on a vendetta of the Bush family.

Church (family), you dont have to go along with me in this because Allah (God) is sufficient. I dont ask anybody to walk with me. As God is walking with me and Im walking with God, He and I represent the majority. I never fear as long as I know that Im with Allah (God) and Allah (God) is with me. Martin Luther King Jr. lost his life because he dared to speak against a war. But this (upcoming) war will bring America down.

I love this country. It is the only country I know. With all its faults, its the greatest country on the earth. And I dont think that we should allow the blind to lead the blind into a ditch. I think those of us whom Allah (God) has blessed with knowledge and courage should say, "Mr. President, this is wrong." I hope that I will have a chorus with me, but Im prepared to sing solo.

So, Im on my way to Washington. I will try to visit the State Department to let them know why Im going and what Im doing so that when I go and come back, they wont arrest me and say hes aiding and abetting terrorists. But the thing that terrorizes the wicked is truth. We have no guns, no weapons, but truth is what terrorizes them, especially when there are men and women who have the courage to speak it and live it and know that this life has no meaning except for truth and the principles of freedom, justice and equality. All lives that are spent in the cause of truth never die. Thats why Jesus said, He who seeks to save his life will lose it. And he who is willing to lose his life for my sake shall gain eternal life."

To all of the young people, I pray that God will bless you to grow to see a better America. But, you will not see a better America unless there are men and women who are willing to pay the price to make a better America for you, even as the founding mothers of this church paid a price that we could be here 90 years later celebrating what they did. Those of us who are up in age dont retire, die on your job. If youre working for master (on a job), retire from that. But never retire from working to make a better society, a better community, and a better people. You do that until death overtakes you. There is no retirement for me. Ill be 70 on my next birthday and Im looking for 20-30 more years of hard work. Im saying to the elders, what you have learned in life experiences, these youngsters have not found it yet. They need us. Dont let the enemy take the youth away from the elders. The youth and the elders belong together so that the elders can pass on to the youth the legacy of life experience so they will never make the mistakes that we made.

Thats what St. Cyprians means to me. The elders that made me, the elders that taught me, the elders that nurtured me, I carry you all in my heart. Wherever I go, you will be with me until death overtakes me. But I know there is no death for me. The work that Allah (God) has caused me to do and am doing, I cannot die. I have young people all around me. I dont know what it is to get old because Im always around young people. If I get around people my age, do you know what they tell me? They say, "guess what? Guess who died last week?"

So hold on to life. Live as long as you can, as well as you can, and be as peaceful in your life as you can. Make life beautiful for one another; that adds years to your life. Dont hold on to bitter things of the past. Give it up. Learn to forgive and get it up off of you, and you will be younger as you get older. You will be wiser as you get older.

I never saw a man in my house, but my mother was enough. I didnt need a man in my house as strong as my mother was. And anybody that knew my mother knows that she was both (mother and father) and then some. And if I ever messed up and I ran down the street, there was Guscott, saying, "Now Gene, you know you shouldnt do that.". There was Wolcott next door. There were the Bowenses across the street. There was Carlton Lewis and Elma Lewis. How I could mess up.

St. Cyprians, I love you. May God bless each and every one of you. Pray for me as I pray for you. Stand together in unity for the love of Allah (God), the love of Christ, the love of each other, and the love of our people.

God bless you all.
