CHICAGO—Believers from Mosque Maryam, national headquarters of the Nation of Islam, and friends and family flocked to Jackson Park in celebration of  Eid-al-Fitr, a celebration of the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting and prayer.

The annual celebration also known as Family Fun Day was held June 15 and was full of love and laughter as guests from various walks of life came to be a part of the experience.

Many people were passing by when they saw the “Eid Mubarak” welcome sign and lines gathering at the food-serving stations. Despite thunderstorms which brought rain and cool weather, everyone made the best of the gathering.

Asalah M. Muhammad, 18, recently accepted to University of Illinois at Chicago was relieved that the weather did not affect the joy of Family Fun Day.

“As far as I was concerned, the outing itself was warm in terms of the people, the atmosphere that was provided, the children, young adults and elderly,” she told The Final Call.

“Old friends and classmates are always a therapeutic encounter. The rain was kind of a drag, but we still managed to make the best of the day. Some were even still barbecuing despite the drizzles. I enjoyed how we all made the best of the day despite the cloudy weather that threatened to become a potential storm.”

Great food prepared by staff of the MGT and GCC included scrumptious veggie burgers, eggplant lasagna, fresh garden salad, baked chicken and homemade desserts. Children and adults played volleyball, baseball and football, danced to a variety of music and enjoyed bouncy houses and obstacle courses.

Others set up tents and ate their food while bonding with their fellow brothers and sisters. All were welcome to enjoy the marking of another successful Ramadan.
