CHICAGO— Not far from the Harold Washington Cultural Center on 44th and King Drive is an avenue of flourishing Black-owned business including restaurants, bakeries and an art gallery. Among these businesses is Legacy Men’s Boutique which sells “quality clothes at thrift store prices” and is owned by entrepreneur Mandene Muhammad.

The idea came from a desire to give back to the community and compensate for the lack of men’s boutiques on the South Side of Chicago.

“I want to be able to help them out, give them what they need,” he told The Final Call in reference to young men and boys of Chicago. “A friend of mine suggested I open a men’s retail shop because there aren’t many on the South Side,” said Mr. Muhammad.

“I just wanted to give back more and more the older I get. I’ve been collecting suits for young men and I wanted to give back to them, as early as eighth grade.”

Legacy Men’s Boutique currently sells donated men’s suits, shirts, shoes, jeans, sweaters and accessories. Mr. Muhammad stated that many people are willing and have helped in supplying the store. Some items have come from people he knows and others from people who just want to support.

“I always accept donations and with social media, a lot of people have put my story out there so a lot of people I don’t even know have clothes and donate,” he continued. “I do purchase some, but 95 percent of the things are donated.”

Many customers leave happy to return as repeat customers. A shopper stated on the boutique’s Facebook page that it is “an amazing experience for men to be exposed to” and another raved about the service and selection as the “best kept secret on the South Side of Chicago.”

In light of its name, Mr. Muhammad hopes Men’s Legacy will leave a legacy behind for young men and boys to follow. He wants to see them do something for themselves, give back and also leave a legacy for the next generation.

“I know what was done for me coming up, so you want to leave a legacy if not for ourselves, for our children. I want the young men to come in and start something for themselves,” he stated.

Legacy Men’s Boutique is located at 4655 S. King Dr., Suite 103 and is open Tuesday – Saturday from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. Sunday and Monday are by appointment only. For more information, visit the boutique’s Facebook page @legacymens1 or call (872) 228-1871.
