'Why are there bullet holes in his back?'
Activists demand accountability for N.Y. police shootings

NEW YORK (FinalCall.com)The Georgy Louisgene Justice Committee is calling for an investigation of his Jan. 16 death by two police officers from Brooklyns 67th Precinct. They are also calling for an indictment against the officers James Muirhead and Joseph Thompson.

The shooting of Mr. Louisgene was ruled justifiable by newly-elected Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Patrick Kelly. According to police reports, Mr. Louisgene was near his job, in the streets, with a knife. The police claim that he was on some sort of medication.

"My brother was not taking any medication. He has never been hospitalized," Abellard Louisgene, the victims sister told The Final Call.

She described her family as "tight-knit". The Louisgene family, natives of Haiti, has lived in their Brooklyn home for nine years. Ms. Louisgene said her brother was taking courses at the Down State Medical Center, also located in Brooklyn.

"We want to know why our brother was killed. Two days after the shooting detectives came to our home claiming that Georgry had a stick in his hand. Now they say he had a knife," she said. "If he was coming at them, why are there bullet holes in his back?"

In the meantime, another Brooklyn family questions why their loved one was shot in the back on May 1. Witnesses say that Egbert Dewgard, 31, was fleeing through a crowded housing development when a federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) agent shot him in the back.

Law enforcement officials have said that Mr. Dewgard, a father of three, was involved in drug activity. According to his family and police records, he had never been arrested, indicted or convicted of drug related activity.

Activists charge that Mr. Dewgards killing was an execution. The shooting also showed a depraved indifference to human life, activists charged.

At a recent Brooklyn rally protesting police brutality, activists read off the names of those killed by police officers: Tasheen Bourne and Andre Fields on May 31, 2000 by officers Herberto Mercado and Luis Campana; No charges against the officers. Gidone "Gary" Busch, killed by at least eight officers on August 30, 1999, again no charges. Patrick Bailey, shot in the back on October 31, 1997 by Kenneth Boss, who a few years later killed Amadou Diallo in the Bronx. And Nicholas Heyward Jr., 14, killed inside the apartment complex where he lived by Housing Officer Brian George; no charges were filed against the officer.

Phone calls to the Brooklyn district attorneys office and the DEA were not returned.
