Syrian conflict, ‘foreign plot’: Presidential Candidate By PressTV.com Updated Jun 2, 2014 - 9:50:06 AM
Syrian presidential candidate Hassan al-Nouri says that the conflict in his country was a pre-planned foreign plot that gained momentum after protests over the mismanagement of the economy.
On Wednesday (May 21), Nouri said Syria was facing a “nationwide war and a foreign plot” that could have been avoided.
“What happened at the start of 2012 made me feel like they (unnamed foreign countries) had been waiting to pounce on Syria.”
Nouri added that the Syrian unrest initially started as inside protests in the city of Daraa against the government’s poor economic management.
“But now... we need to take into consideration that there is a ... conspiracy.”
Nouri, a former minister of administrative development, is running against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Maher al-Hajjar in the country’s June 3 presidential elections.
Syria has been the scene of a deadly crisis since March 2011, with foreign-backed militants carrying out attacks across the country.
The Western powers and their regional allies—especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey—are said to be supporting the militants operating inside Syria.
Over 160,000 people have reportedly been killed and millions displaced due to the violence fueled by the foreign-backed militants.
