CHICAGO - Final Call editor Richard B. Muhammad and National Prison Reform Minister Abdullah Muhammad spent the morning May 2 with students at D.S. Wentworth Elementary School in the Englewood Community. Their visit was part of 100 Positive African American Men a month-long effort by Principal Dina L. Everage  to expose children to life options, life lessons, careers and positive Black men. The May effort is in its fifth year.

Every Monday and every Friday in May, Black men are invited into the school to dialogue and interact with students. Men can read to students, talk about careers, perform or share talents and offer virtually any educational and positive activity.

“Every year at this time I am more amazed by the caliber and passion of men that my students get to meet!” said the principal in an e-mail message. “I know that 2014 will be our greatest and most powerful showing yet,” she added.

D.S.W. has gone through a significant transition this school year, moving to a different location and doubling its population. Some of its challenges include negative behavior, gangs, violence, academic and attendance issues, like many city schools. “You can’t be what you can’t see!” and “You can’t go where you don’t know!” is Principal Everage’s mantra and she is determined to have children see and experience great possibility.

100 Positive Black men offers hope, inspiration and makes a difference, according to the principal. When Richard B. Muhammad and Abdullah Muhammad spent the morning with the children, students were inquisitive, engaged, well-behaved and asked the Muslim men to come back. Both agreed to do so.

More men are invited and needed to participate Mondays and Fridays, but Principal Everage invites positive men to come when they are free. D.S. Wentworth Elementary School is located at 1340 W. 71st Street in Chicago. Join 100 Positive Black Men, call the school at (773) 535-3394 for more information or to participate. Or e-mail Principal Everage at [email protected].
