FCN Editorial - From Emmitt Till to Marcus DixonBy FinalCall.com News | Last updated: Feb 3, 2004 - 11:27:00 PM
(FinalCall.com) - The Honorable Elijah Muhammad wrote in "What the Muslims Believe" in the Muslim Program that the offer of integration is hypocritical and is made by those who are trying to deceive the Black peoples into believing that their 400-year-old open enemies of freedom, justice and equality are, all of a sudden, their friends.
From Emmitt Till, the 14-year-old who was brutally killed for whistling at a White woman, to Marcus Dixon, a 19-year-old with a 3.96 GPA, a 1200 on his SAT and a scholarship to Vanderbilt University, who currently sits in jail on a 10 year sentence, many of our young men and grown men have been fooled by their interactions with White women.
The teenage misbehavior of Till and Dixon led the first to his cruel and untimely death and the second to his cruel and unexpected incarceration. The Till murder happened almost 50 years ago and the Dixon case was just appealed to the Georgia Supreme Court.
The teen years are a time of exploration, discovery and adventure—that is if you’re young, gifted and White. If you’re young, gifted and Black, another set of rules apply to your conduct. If you’re young, gifted and Black and also want to have sex with White girls, add another set of rules to your conduct.
In the 1950s, it was clearly understood by all that the consequences for a Black man, young or old, accused of inappropriately relating to any White woman was death. It was just that simple. If a Black man was believed to have crossed that line, death was on the other side, no questions asked, even if the female lied.
It’s a slap in the face to grow up thinking that you’re equal to White people and then when you conduct yourself like other White teens, the courts swiftly remind you that you are not White, you are indeed Black, and jail is where you belong.
Mr. Dixon was so intoxicated by the promise of integration that he didn’t even listen to his White adopted mother, Mrs. Peri Jones, when she warned him to leave the White girls alone, warning that they would be trouble for him, saying one thing in private and another in public.
Mrs. Jones and her husband Tim were also drunk with the promise of integration when they adopted Mr. Dixon. Family members refused to speak when they brought Marcus into their home and they were called "Nigger lovers" by neighbors.
This is the plight we face when we try to mix Black and White together. Society didn’t like it in the early 1900s when heavy weight champion boxer Jack Johnson insisted upon his right to a White woman and they don’t like it today that so many Black professional athletes have White wives.
The FBI is currently investigating hate mail that these players have received threatening their lives. This is not the Nation of Islam preaching or teaching hate for White people. We don’t have to—their conduct is a perfect instructor of how they feel for us.
We don’t hold the White woman up as the standard of beauty and refinement. Just as society does not want Black men with White women, we intend to protect our women and keep them for Black men. We are pained by the stories too numerous to count of our sisters who have relations with White men. Some do it for purely economic reasons, some for romance and some with questionable motives.
The story of Strom Thurmond’s unrecognized daughter, Mrs. Essie Mae Washington-Williams, by the teen maid that lived in his home reminded America of the difficult situation Black women face every day when confronted with White men of power and authority. Was it a true romance, was it rape, was it a means to an end or was it something else? We may never know, but what we do know is that interracial relationships between Black and White have meant little more than pain and heartache for many Black people from Emmitt Till to Marcus Dixon.
White people do not mind veering off the path of justice into the thicket of persecution to make the point: Leave the White woman alone! The time-tested words of comedienne Jackie "Moms" Mabley ring true, "If you want a White girl, that’s alright—just make sure she’s Black."
This is The Final Call. Think, reflect, then get up Black man and find a Black woman.
