'The Time and What Must Be Done' 2013 Lecture Series, Part 24

In The Name of Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful.

Greetings to you. I am Minister Louis Farrakhan, the National Representative of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad—that Great Preacher of Freedom, Justice and Equality to the Black man and woman of America and the Western Hemisphere, and the Aboriginal People of the Earth; The Eternal Leader of the Nation of Islam, and a Warner to the government and people of the United States of America, and a Warner to the nations of the Earth.

Once again, it is my great privilege and pleasure to come to you on Part 24 of our year-long broadcast of the subject “The Time and What Must Be Done.” That scripture in the Holy Qur’an, Surah 103 Al-Asr (“The Time”) that this subject matter is based on is dealing with: 1.) The Time of the end of “a people” and “a world,” and 2.) The Time of the rise of a people that had been considered “dead.”

This “Time” is The Time of The Presence of God among the people, and The Time of The Manifestation of “Satan.” It is The Time that the people that have “walked in darkness” shall see a “Great Light”; and upon that people that walked in darkness has The Light shined. The Honorable Elijah Muhammad taught us that that people that have walked in darkness, “gross darkness,” are The Black man and woman of America and the Western Hemisphere—but, it is to this people that God has raised up “a Light in the Darkness,” and so upon this people has the light shined.

“Light” is a powerful force, for the Honorable Elijah Muhammad has taught us that light striking the Earth at its equator causes the Earth to spin, and create rotation and revolution, 365 1/4 days around the sun making “1 year”; and 23 hours, 56 minutes and 46 seconds making “1 day.” “The Time”…

What is ‘The Final Call’ to ‘Islam’?

One day, the Honorable Elijah Muhammad and I were sitting together at his home, and he had several very important guests at his table; and as he usually does during dinner, he was teaching. And while he was teaching, he broke the subject matter and looked directly at me, and said to me: “Brother, if there was any symbol that I could use to represent my work, it would be a trumpet”—and then he went right back to teaching his guests. A little while later he broke that conversation again, and looked at me and said: “And have that trumpet coming out of the corner of the page”—and then he went right back to teaching.

I have to tell you: I didn’t fully understand what he was saying, or why he was saying it. But it was so unusual to break the conversation and direct his talk to me on something that I had no knowledge of what he was telling me!

Then, another time he just said: “Brother, go like you see me go, and do like you see me do.” So here you have The Final Call newspaper… This great newspaper that is designed and dedicated to The Resurrection of The Black Man and Woman of America is a “take-off” of the newspaper that was the first newspaper of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad and The Nation of Islam, called “The Final Call to Islam.” Well, I didn’t want to say “The Final Call to Islam”; I just said “The Final Call.” But it is “The Final Call” to “Islam.”

And what is “Islam”? And why should there be a “Final Call”? The Honorable Elijah Muhammad taught us that “Islam” means “entire submission to do The Will of God”—and when we submit our will to do God’s Will, we are then called “Muslims” or “The Righteous.”

Every prophet of God didn’t do his own will—every prophet spoke The Will of God, and did their best to live The Will of God, and that is why in the Holy Qur’an it says all the prophets were “Muslims.” It only means they were righteous men who gave their energy of life to submission to do God’s Will. The greatest of these, the most perfect example of this, The Qur’an says, was Prophet Jesus, for Jesus obeyed Almighty God Allah perfectly! (Consider Surah 43 Az-Zukhruf (“Gold”), verses 57-59: “And when the son of Mary is mentioned as an example, lo! thy people raise a clamour thereat. And they say: Are our gods better, or is he? They set it forth to thee only by way of disputation. Nay, they are a contentious people. He was naught but a servant on whom We bestowed favour and We made him an example for the Children of Israel.”)

So that “obedience to God” is what Jesus said in the Book of Luke, Chapter 22, verse 42, “Not my will, but Thy will be done”; and, in the Book of John, Chapter 12, verses 46-50, he said, “Whatsoever The Father bids me to say, that I say”—that is “Islam”! That is what we have “The Final Call” to accept!

You may say, “I am a Christian.” That is fine. You may say, “I am a Jew”—that is fine! You may say “I am a Buddhist”… All these names have value! But what undergirds these names is God’s delivering, through a messenger, of His Will; and then asking us to surrender our self to do His Will, and enter into peace: The Honorable Elijah Muhammad said that this is “The Nature of God” and “the nature” in which He created the human being.

So no matter what you call yourself: By nature you are born to submit your will to do The Will of God. And so when we say “you are a Muslim,” even though you’re a “Christian,” it is because your nature is to “obey God”—and that’s the same “religion” that God gave Adam in The Garden. That “religion” had no name; it just was “God giving commands” that, unfortunately, Adam disobeyed.

Conditions keeping our youth rotating around ‘protected sanctuaries’ of crime, violence

In Part 23 of “The Time and What Must Be Done” we talked about “What Must Be Done,” and that is: We must do everything in our power to save our youth. We quoted from a lecture titled “The Crisis in America’s Cities: An Analysis of Social Disorder and a Plan of Action Against Poverty, Discrimination and Racism in Urban America” that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. presented to the SCLC Convention in Atlanta, Georgia on August 15, 1967. In that lecture, Dr. King was talking about the condition of the so-called Negroes in America, and I would like to quote something he said that should usher in “the meat” of our subject today. Dr. King said: “Finally, a complex of causes is found in the conditions of urban life. Crime is well organized in the cities and produces an underclass of great numbers. … Organized crime has a protected sanctuary in the slums, with police tolerance, if not connivance. It becomes a normal feature of life, poisoning the young and confounding the adult. It adds, in substantial numbers, the professional criminal to outbreaks, exacerbating the results. When they merge with the declassed and dispossessed, also numerous in the slums, a large anti-social force is assembled.”

Last spring, when we carried The Fruit of Islam (F.O.I.) out into the worst parts of our city in Chicago and 160 cities across America where our people reside, as we spoke to the aldermen before we went out, and as we spoke to the police commanders in those districts, the ever-recurring theme, particularly among the aldermen, was that: “As long as the crime stayed in the Black community, they [‘law enforcement’] tolerated it.” They wanted that crime to be contained in what is called “the hood” or “the ghetto”—no effort whatsoever was made to give the young people hope in “a better life,” but just keep them rotating around drugs and crime, and violence and gang conflict, “so we can fill the jails with Black youth.”

Please recall from last week when we talked about Illinois Senators Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and Senator Richard “Dick” Durbin (D-Ill.) proposing that 18,000 young Black men who may have a gang affiliation of the “Gangster Disciples” would be taken off the streets. They said they had “enough space” for them in prison, but they have made no space for them in educational institutions and pursuits; they’ve made no space for them in the creation of job opportunities; they’ve made no space for them to make good use of their skills and talents, and even to develop their skills and talents that they might become useful citizens in the cities in which we live. So “slums” and “crime” is going on in our community, and Dr. King said it was like a sanctuary.

A “sanctuary” is “a safe place that one goes to seek refuge.” But if “the ’hood,” or where we live, the so-called ghettos, are “sanctuaries for crime,” then that means it is “safe,” then, to commit crime; it is “safe” to sell drugs, it’s “safe” to turn your women and girls into prostitution. It is “safe” to rape and to rob and to pillage… And when there are no jobs, and there’s gross unemployment, then crime and violence become the order of the day.

The ‘trumpet’ whose sound is so clear: He is a man full of ‘The Fire of The Holy Spirit of Allah’

In the Book of Isaiah, Chapter 61, verses 1-2, the scripture reads: “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; [and] To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn.” The Black community needs a Comforter, for there is much mourning, much sadness, much grief, and much loss in our community—but the thing that I wanted to stress in these verses of the Bible is that somebody is talking here.

The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad was making a broadcast one day on “The Theology of Time,” and in that July 16, 1972 message, he mentioned Brother Minister Louis Farrakhan: “…You know, Brother Farrakhan is a very good minister. He has been with us for a long time, and he’s a man full of fire—The Fire of The Holy Spirit of Allah. Wonderful minister, wonderful. …” When your teacher, whom you believe at that point is “The Messenger of God”—we know him today as The Messiah, the long-looked-for “Messiah”: The Honorable Elijah Muhammad was telling us, in describing something of my spirit, that Brother Farrakhan is “full,” he said, “of The Fire of The Holy Spirit of God.”

In the Holy Qur’an, Surah 33 Al-Ahzah (“The Allies”), verses 45-46, it likens the “last Messenger of God” as “a light-giving sun”: “O Prophet, surely We have sent thee as a witness, and a bearer of good news and a warner, And as an inviter to Allah by His permission, and as a light-giving sun.” Well, the physical “day sun” that illuminates the Earth is nothing but a ball of fire… So if this “sun,” a “light-giving” sun, is what “Muhammad” is and was, then “The Fire” of The Holy Spirit of Allah (God) is a part of “the bearing”—or, the manifestation of the character of Muhammad!

Also consider the following three verses in the Holy Qur’an when Jesus’ name is mentioned; that when God taught him The Wisdom, The Book, The Torah, The Gospel, it also says “He strengthened Jesus with The Holy Spirit”:

Surah 2 Al-Baqarah (“The Cow”), verse 87: “And We indeed gave Moses the Book and We sent messengers after him one after another and We gave Jesus, son of Mary, clear arguments and strengthened him with the Holy Spirit. …”

Surah 2 Al-Baqarah (“The Cow”), verse 253: “We have made some of these messengers to excel others. Among them are they to whom God spoke, and some of them He exalted by (many) degrees of rank. And We gave clear arguments to Jesus son of Mary, and strengthened him with the Holy Spirit. …”1.

Surah 5 Al-Ma’idah (“The Food”), verse 110: “When Allah will say: O Jesus, son of Mary, remember My favour to thee and to thy mother, when I strengthened thee with the Holy Spirit; thou spokest to people in the cradle and in old age, and when I taught thee the Book and the Wisdom and the Torah and the Gospel, and when thou didst determine out of clay a thing like the form of a bird by My permission, then thou didst breathe into it and it became a bird by My permission; and thou didst heal the blind and the leprous by My permission; and when thou didst raise the dead by My permission; and when I withheld the Children of Israel from thee when thou camest to them with clear arguments—but those of them who disbelieved said: This is nothing but clear enchantment.”

When I look back at my teacher, and what he was trying to get me to see of myself, that: The burning in my own heart is to see a people free; that “the burning” in the core of my being is a fire that yearns to see humanity escape God’s Wrath!

“The Holy Spirit” of God is that which is not “mixed,” “corrupted” or “tampered” with; it is The Pure Energy of God that is found in The Perfect Revelation of His Truth! So when your heart, your mind, your being is so connected to The Truth, that you become “one” with that Truth that you preach, then The Fire of The Truth from God Himself makes you to have not just “knowledge” and “wisdom,” but to have also The Anointing of The Spirit of God! And it is that “Anointing” that is on The Servant of God that allows him to elaborate, to elucidate and to give a clear exegesis of The Teachings of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad!

That is why the Honorable Elijah Muhammad told his followers, during another “Theology of Time” message he delivered on July 30, 1972: “…I want you to remember today I have one of my greatest teachers here. [Why you hiding behind the sycamore tree for, Brother? Come on ‘round here, up here where they can see you]. We have with us today, our great National Preacher: The preacher who don’t mind going into Harlem, New York, one of the most worst towns in our nation or city; it is our brother in Detroit and Chicago, out of New York—but I want you to remember every week he’s on the air helping me to reach those people that I can’t get out of my house and go reach them, like he. I want you to pay great attention to his preaching. His preaching is a bearing of witness to me and what God have given to me. This is one of the strongest national preachers that I have in the bounds of North America. Everywhere you hear him, listen to him. Everywhere you see him, look at him. Everywhere he advise you to go, go. Everywhere he advise you to stay from, stay from. So we’re thankful to Allah for this great helper of mine: Minister Farrakhan. He’s not a proud man. He’s a very humble man. If he can carry you across the lake without dumping you in, he don’t say when he get on the other side, ‘You see what I have done?’—he tell you to ‘See what Allah has done.’ He don’t take it upon himself. He’s a mighty fine preacher. We hear him every week, and I say continue to hear our Minister Farrakhan.”

“When you see him, look at him.” Why should you “look” at him? Because you will see that God is doing something with him! “When he speaks, listen to him,” because if you listen, you will know that God is feeding him! And when you feel “the fire” of his total commitment to The Word that he preaches, then you will know he is an Anointed Servant of God.

The Bible teaches in the Book of Zechariah, Chapter 4, verse 6, “not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, sayeth the Lord.” Well, if today we want to do anything, we have to do it by The Power of God’s Spirit! So let’s go back to the scripture of Isaiah, Chapter 61 where it says of the one whom “The Spirit of the Lord God” is upon, whom the Lord has anointed “to preach,” now, “good tidings unto the meek”:

For 24 weeks I have been giving you “good news” that The Time of your Deliverance has come!

For 24 weeks you could see, and hear, that The Word of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad is a Word that “binds up the brokenhearted”; it’s a Word that “proclaims liberty to the captives”!

Study the Book of Isaiah, Chapter 58, verse 1 where God says: “Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.” For 24 weeks now, we have “lifted up our voice”—and we have spared nothing, or no one. And my voice is like a “trumpet”; and that’s why the Honorable Elijah Muhammad broke into that conversation and said: “If there was any symbol that could represent my work, it would be a trumpet.”

“What is your work?” is the question being asked of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad! His Work is The Resurrection of The Dead—and I am his Trumpet. A trumpet has a sound that is difficult for you to ignore! Whenever you go to a nightclub, and the trumpeter picks up that trumpet and delivers his solo: If his trumpet is not “muted,” it can be heard above all the members of the band. That’s the sound of the trumpet… And when one Anointed with The Spirit of God is being used by God as His Trumpet above all the din (“a mass of discordant, inharmonious sounds”) of those who preach, above all the confusion of those who preach—a clear sound resonates from that Anointed One which will bring about The Resurrection of The Mentally and Spiritually Dead.

America’s efforts to imprison true freedom fighters

My dear brothers and sisters, right now as we speak: Mumia Abu Jamal is absolutely a prisoner of conscience. A “prisoner,” that if they get their way, they will sentence my brother, and order his death. But in a hearing, they wanted to give him a new trial, where his attorneys could produce evidence that might lead to Mumia Abu Jamal’s freedom! But those that oppose it are seeking, now, to overturn the lower court ruling, and sentence my brother to death. Mumia Abu Jamal is a political prisoner.

What is a “political prisoner”? According to the American Heritage Dictionary, a “political prisoner” is “a person who has been imprisoned for holding or advocating dissenting political views.” When I was in Syria several years ago, in a meeting with the then-president Haffaz al-Assad, current Syrian president Bashar al-Assad’s father, he shared with me a conversation that he had with former U.S. President George Herbert Walker Bush; that they were talking about “terrorism.” And, there are so many different definitions of what a “terrorist” is—Mr. Assad asked Mr. Bush, “Define the term for me.” And guess what? The “terrorist,” to America, is the freedom fighter: Those who fight for liberation.

Nelson Mandela was looked upon by the regime in South Africa as a “terrorist.” Today we look at Nelson Mandela as a universal hero; a man of stellar character. A man who served 27 years in prison for a crime that he did not do—he just was standing up for the liberation of his people. When I was in Zimbabwe, when it used to be called “Rhodesia” when Joshua Nkomo and Robert Mugabe were fighting for the liberation of their people, I read the papers written by Europeans, who had usurped their land! And these Europeans called the fighters for liberation “terrorists.”

Oh America: You have just picked people up in different parts of different countries, and brought them to Guantanamo Bay. You won’t even charge them, but you just hold them. President Obama: You said that one of the first things you would do when you became president was to close down Guantánamo Bay—“free the captive”! This has not been done.

Have you heard of my sister “Joanne Chesimard,” also known as Assata Shakur? I’m using her “slave name,” but her real name, that is an African name, is Assata Shakur; she said that it means “one who struggles, who fights for her people.” She is a “political prisoner,” and now she is looked upon as a “domestic terrorist.” I met her when I was in Cuba. I talked with my sister. She is now 65 years of age… She “terrorizes” nobody. Why, then, would the Justice Department of the government of the United States make this sister a “domestic terrorist”? The F.B.I. is offering $2 million for her capture. And now that she’s labeled a “domestic terrorist”: Will our government find out where she lives, and send a drone to kill her? Will you send people into Cuba to try to harm her, and bring her back to America as a “domestic terrorist”?

Pay attention to Sister Assata’s words: “…I had long ago become convinced that revolution was a science. Generalities were no longer enough for me. Like my comrades, I believed that a higher level of political sophistication was necessary and that unity in the Black community had become a priority. We could never afford to forget the lessons we had learned from COINTELPRO [the Counterintelligence Program of the United States government]. As far as I was concerned, building a sense of national consciousness was one of the most important tasks that lay ahead of us. I couldn’t see how we could seriously struggle without having a strong sense of collectivity, without being responsible for each other and to each other.” She went on to also say: “I am a Black revolutionary woman, and because of this I have been charged with and accused of every alleged crime in which a woman was believed to have participated. The alleged crimes in which only men were supposedly involved; I have been accused of planning. They have plastered pictures alleged to be me in post offices, airports, hotels, police cars, subways, banks, television, and newspapers. They have offered”—at that time of her writing—“over fifty thousand dollars in rewards for my capture”—and now, as I fore stated, the reward is $2 million—“and they have issued orders to shoot on sight and shoot to kill.”

Let me ask a question: What happened in the Justice Department that you would label my sister a “domestic terrorist”? What did she do? She’s been in Cuba for nearly 30 years—who did she “terrorize”? Who did she “involve in a plot” to overthrow this government that you could label her a “domestic terrorist”? My, my, my… Some of you have said you believe that she’s been “feeding” stuff to people that are against the government of America. You “believe”? You don’t classify people on a “belief”! You classify people on actual facts! What are the actual facts of our sister—living in Cuba, because she can’t come back to the place of her birth because of what you have falsely labeled her? I am really disappointed that our president, and our Justice Department under Mr. Eric Holder, would allow our sister to be named a “domestic terrorist.”

But you know, there are many political prisoners, now, that I am saying in The Name of Allah and His Messiah: They have to be set free! Do you remember…

Leonard Peltier of “AIM” (the American Indian Movement): Arrested for allegedly shooting a F.B.I. figure. That poor man has been in prison for a long, long time. When are you going to set him free? You have given men like Leonard Peltier, and others, life sentences…

Brother Imam Jamil Al-Amin: I visited him when he was [at a maximum security facility] in Reidsville, Georgia. You took from Georgia and put him in Florence, Colorado [at a “supermax” facility]—and he’s there for life. For “life,” on a trumped up charge that “he murdered somebody”?

Geronimo Ji Jaga Pratt: A Vietnam veteran; a member of The Black Panther Party that the F.B.I. feared because he was decorated as a war hero. You were afraid that he would organize Black youth… He spent 27 years of his life in prisons, and when he was let out, and all charges dropped against him, he left America and went to Africa, and died a little over a year ago. Died in Africa—died after serving time in prison for a crime he did not commit! My dear brothers and sisters: These are actions of a government that fears Black Liberation!

Larry Hoover: Leader of the Gangster Disciples. After he changed that name to mean “Growth and Development,” he then started pushing members of the “Gangster Disciples” into school to get a high school education, and go on to do constructive things. He was more dangerous doing that than selling drugs—so you arrested him while he was in prison, and gave him six life terms! Six! You never intend for my brother to get out of prison! You did the same to:

Chief Malik Ka’bah, a.k.a. “Jeff Fort” of the Blackstone Rangers [“Black P. Stone Nation”]. They’re all in the same prison in Florence, Colorado, maximum security; in prison 23 hours a day, with only 1 hour out. But you have not been able to break them; Jamil Al-Amin is there because he fights for The Liberation of Black people, and he fights for Islam! Soon, you will be released; otherwise, you would make God and His prophets “liars.” The “captives” that are bound will eventually be set free. Who else do you have behind prison bars?

The Cuban Five: Cuban patriots who came to south Florida to find out who was plotting and planning, and bombing hotels and doing terrorism inside Cuba! And when President Fidél Castro sent an emissary to the F.B.I., and told them the information that The Cuban Five had learned about those “domestic terrorists” that were being used to destroy the influence of Cuba and to kill innocent people: Instead of you arresting the real “domestic terrorists,” you arrested The Cuban Five.

Some of them you’ve given life terms to, just for exposing the wickedness of some Cubans living in south Florida that are backed by a government that is not right.

Do you have a cell already set up for me?

America, your evil has entered The Ears and Heart of God Himself. The evil that you do to people: Did you not know that you have to pay for that? Did you not know that “God is not mocked”—that whatever you sow you’re going to have to reap? These “political prisoners” should be set free… Larry Hoover, Chief Malik: They could do great work in the inner-cities, organizing young men not to be destroyers of their communities, but organizing them to do good for their communities! You wouldn’t give them that chance, but your own White criminals, your own Jewish criminals: You open a way for them.

We thank God for Bobby Kennedy and John Fitzgerald Kennedy, but I don’t think their dad Joseph P. Kennedy was “holy” and “righteous”—but the money that he got through bootlegging: He could make his sons “senators” and “presidents.” You wouldn’t allow those of us who have had a criminal past to even reform, and be redeemed! But you say you “believe in God.” The hypocrisy of the United States government is about to be shown up.

‘denying himself’ for a cause bigger than himself

In the early part of June 2013, do you remember on the news a young man named Edward Snowden, 29 years of age, who was working for a company (Booz Allen Hamilton, a management and technology consulting firm) that did work for the National Security Agency (“NSA”)—and he “blew the whistle” on the NSA spying on American citizens? Oh, they are trashing that young man today… And some believe that they will seek him out to kill him.

I don’t know what his religious persuasion is, but if any man was a “follower of Christ,” it would be him. Jesus said: “If any man would be my disciple, he must first deny himself”—this young man denied himself a $200,000-a-year job; denied his girlfriend, denied his family; denied his place in his own country so that he could make the American people know that they are being spied on—and to listen to the officials of the National Security Agency on television, saying to the government: “Oh, no… We are not doing this to the American people! I mean, we are just looking, you know, where the ‘terrorists’ are!” You are such a noble liar! You can’t help it; you love to lie. But you know what? The American people are not being fooled. And I hope that the senators who are questioning the officials of the National Security Agency are not being fooled.

That man denied himself, and picked up “a cross,” and is now being crucified… Brothers and sisters, if you love The Truth: What price are you willing to pay for The Success of Truth—and The Righteousness that comes, and The Justice that comes from believing in The Truth and acting on its principles?

We, in The Nation of Islam, have come forward, and have picked up “our cross”: We deny ourselves on a daily basis for The Truth that the Honorable Elijah Muhammad has given to us for The Liberation of Our People by standing with Assata Shakur, by standing with Mumia Abu Jamal—by standing with those who have been imprisoned, and are political prisoners! By standing with The Cuban Five, by standing with Leonard Peltier! By standing with all of those who are the victims of a government that has lost its soul. And I’m sorry, “Black America”: You can’t be “the soul” of a soul-less nation. You better look at the 23rd Psalm, and get a “restoration” for your own soul—because The Enemy now is going “all out” with a “final assault” on those who tell The Truth.

May God bless you pastors, to go into your scriptures and be true to The Gospel: Preach what God has revealed, and don’t fear the censure of any censurer! Stand up for The Truth, and let God protect you, if it pleases Him. And if it doesn’t, then die on behalf of The Truth for that is the most important way to die: In sacrificing your life for The Truth! This young man, Snowden, is like those in the Buddhist faith who were immolating themselves to teach a lesson… That’s “all we have”—is our lives! And when we are willing to sacrifice our lives for a cause bigger than our lives, then our lives and our deaths, and our sacrifice have meaning!

Ask God to remove fear from our hearts! Ask Him to strengthen us, so that we won’t be cowards! Ask God to anoint us with His Spirit, that we will “cry aloud” and “spare not”; that we will stand up anointed with The Spirit of God and “preach the good tidings” to the Black man and woman of America; that He, and we, may rejoice that The Hour of Our Deliverance has come—and The Day of Vengeance of our God has also come!
